Thanks so much for donating to Loni and Jes's campaign with GambiaRising to give upcountry Gambian teachers the materials they need to build housing for themselves.
It is difficult enough to get good Gambian teachers to locate in rural villages and towns, when schools near the coast have the appeal that more urban areas often have for young professionals. But when there is no housing available for those teachers, it is absurdly difficult.
That's the problem we are trying to solve, by providing sand, gravel, cement, corrugate, and other sundries so that the dedicated teachers at St. John's School for the Deaf and St. Joseph's School for Girls in the upcountry town of Basse can build housing for themselves. Building teachers' housing will not only upgrade their living standards, but it will enable them to live as a community, next to the school, and will greatly enhance the chances of attracting, and retaining, committed Gambian teachers to come to (and stay in) Basse to teach.
And if we are successful in funding these, then the teachers at the Sare Ngai and Saruja Lower Basic Schools are hoping we'll come to their rescue as well. These two schools, in the remote Fulladu West region of The Gambia's Central River Region, far from the nearest paved road, have little hope of attracting and retaining qualified teachers without housing for them as well.
GambiaRising was founded by returned Peace Corps volunteers and staff and works through an all-volunteer organization; this means that 100% of our donation will go to support these teachers and these schools.
Thanks so much for giving them a chance to help themselves, and to better educate the children in their care.
