We work informally with a number of Peace Corps volunteers in The Gambia and also some of the Gambian staff of Peace Corps, who volunteer their service in their spare time. GambiaRising has no formal relationship with Peace Corps but works with individuals there in a variety of ways. A web site, created by Peace Corps volunteers, has information about the country, with an added bonus of downloadable language lessons for six of the country's languages. Here is the web site: http://sites.google.com/site/gamlangs/
Gambia Health Education Liaison Project (GambiaHELP)
GambiaHELP was founded by a returned Peace Corps volunteer. It is involved in a variety of support programs, including sending a container of donated goods to Banjul each year. GambiaHELP works with GambiaRising on a number of fronts, especially when we need equipment sent to The Gambia. http://www.gambiahelp.org/index.html
When starting any program, there are moments you look back on as turning points. Most of those that led to GambiaRising have to do with students who through one means or another came to our attention and stole our hearts. But what allowed us to think that something could actually be done about the situations that were coming to our attention, was the generosity of a few friends who stepped up in the early days and said they would be part of the solution to the problems we were uncovering. Among those, the Entrekin Foundation played a vital role, working with GambiaHELP, laying the cornerstone in 2009 and encouraging us to think about what might be done, instead of what was not being done.
West Africa Medicine and Education
This effort of an American doctor who married a Gambian and moved to the country, is doing good work with rural and urban health clinics. http://www.westafricamedicine.org/
Animal Care Association of The Gambia
Most dogs and cats in The Gambia live on the streets. While people can be generous with leftover food, there are often no leftovers, and there are no caregivers to provide medical care when they get sick. That's where these wonderful folks come in. Taking in injured animals, caring for the sick, neutering when they can. www.animalcaregambia.com/
