Help Demba Go To College

Sanchez Thomas writes:

This is Demba Jallow, a native of Sambel Kunda, the village I have been posted at for my two year service in the Peace Corps. He’s a good friend and has been a great resource for me since living here. In 2018 Demba was the first in his family to graduate from High School from one of Gambia’s well known schools in the provinces called Armitage.  Wanting to further his education Demba applied to The Gambia College and was accepted and was well on his way to being a first generation college student! Unfortunately without the financial means to pay tuition, room and board fees, he was unable to attend. Unlike America there are not many financial resources available for Gambians to further their education, and coming from an area where the value of education is not fully understood, he had no help.

In several conversations Demba expressed to me how disappointed and depressed he was as he watched many of his friends go off to college last year as he could not due to lack of financial support. This year however, he has been taking steps to make sure he is able to attend college this upcoming school year. He has been working in construction, farming and saving up. Unfortunately it will not be enough to cover his tuition of 3 years. Therefore, I am asking for family and friends back home to help me support this young man's dream of attending college this year! Tuition and school supplies averages to about $400 a year, totaling at $1,200 for 3 years.  Gambia Rising, an NGO geared towards helping provide financial support to school aged children in The Gambia through in kind donations from people in America, has created an easy weblink for funds to be donated to help people like Demba who struggle financially to succeed in furthering their education. Anything you can give to help this young man on his journey to being a first generation college student in his family would be greatly appreciated!

GambiaRising was founded by returned Peace Corps volunteers and staff and will use 100% of all donated funds to support Demba's education.  You can donate ANY amount, or better yet sign up for a monthly donation of any amount.  All Demba needs is 3 people donating $10 per month to achieve his dream! (OK, plus one more donating $3 per month; but you see how much a small monthly donation can do.)
