Help Samuel Boateng Get His Nursing Degree
Nurses are the heart of the health care system, whether in the US or in Africa. A Gambian friend who is studying nursing in Ghana appealed to us to try to help a fellow student.
Sam is 33. He is dirt-poor and has had an uphill battle to get money for school. Homeless while attending school he has been sleeping on friends' floors but still acing many courses. Last semester he had to borrow nearly $1000 to get through. This semester he's had to drop out. |
This is a guy who has gotten almost all A's and B's; who tutors his fellow students in a study group and helps them achieve. He is respected by the other students and is president of the Student Nurse and Midwives Association.
Tuition is $600 per semester. Food and lodging is $300 per semester. He will need this for three semesters.
In addition, he had to borrow $930 for last semester (tuition + interest on the loan + late registration fee).
So, that's $3360 total that he will need to graduate and repay his loan. It is hard to over-state how out of reach that is for Samuel. But here's the good news: it would only take 6 people to pledge $25 per month for two years to raise $3,600 - and give Sam some breathing room for books and incidental expenses.
