KAM Disaster Relief

A terrible wind storm hit Kerr Alhagi Mallik and the surrounding area on Wednesday July 7th 2021.  The roofs of more than half the houses were torn off, just as the rainy season is beginning in full force, leaving people with no shelter from the rain or sun. Concrete block walls were flattened.  Huge shade trees and mango trees were demolished.  Fortunately, no lives were lost in this village although 10 people died in this storm in other villages.  There are no family compounds that did not experience the destruction of this fierce wind storm. This storm came during one of the hungry seasons, after the crops have been planted but before they have matured, and has diverted efforts from farming to repairing shelter.  It also came in month 16 of the coronavirus pandemic which has weakened the tourism-dependent economy of the country.

Funds raised will be used to purchase corrugated metal and wood to repair roofs in Kerr Alhagi Mallik.  The Village Development Committee, led by Fat Sallah and Ousaino Gai, will allocate funds in an effective and equitable manner.  Luckily, a Dutch NGO has already committed to repairing damage to the elementary school.  Although it is unlikely we will raise more Disaster Relief funds than are needed, any excess funds will be transferred towards the KAM Scholarship Fund for the upcoming 2021-2022 school year.

Both former Peace Corps volunteers from KAM thank you for your assistance to this community.
